The Approach

I wanted it to look like the graffiti from our Morlock Assignment in first semester, so I dug up some old photos. graf7 graf3

I pretty much combined these two to create the label.

The Challenge

The biggest challenge was vectoring the graffiti. I went through each photo looking for elements that I could use in a label/logo/design. I probably vectored more than I should have trying to piece them all together, these two just looked like they belonged together.

The Goal/Solution

I tried using the Hype frame work to randomize the waves, but it all looked “splotchy” and ended up vectoring the splotches instead.

Result

The resulting wine label was “Frankensteined” together by a bunch of vectors, but I like how the Medusa-esque creature came together. I through on a quick logo for AMD so take up some space on the label. The background is not green, it would just be a separate sticker on the bottle, I made it green because it was the bottle colour.

The Approach

I first decided to use The Birthday Massacre’s Song Alibis. From there, their type of style is easy to recreate. I wanted to have their logo and photo’s from one of their concerts incorporated.

The Challenge

Their logo looked like a jumbled mess when it was pulsing to the music, so I opted to have one in the corner going to the beat. Then I wanted to incorporate the clock, i was unable to find a good quality image that I could photoshop out the hands, so I vectored the entire thing and imported into flash. That probably took the most time out of everything. I used the Hype framework to make the clock rotate but the hands are spinning with code I had from my last semester Flash class.

The Goal

The goal was to make it so the user was only able to draw inside the logo on the screen, but I couldn’t figure out how to mask it like that. Otherwise, it turned out exactly how I wanted it.

Results/Solution

I let the user draw over the whole page, I wanted to leave it in there regardless. The main menu button doesn’t stop the music, but the music keeps going regardless, so I left it there as well, it works more as a refreshing page for the drawing aspect.

A Mess of Something

Blee blah bloo blee… I’m going to take this opportunity to describe to any reader my feelings on certain things.

1 – school – It sucks, it’s mostly an awkward environment mainly inhabited by drunkards and villainous sex fiends.

2 – flash – is dead, and has stupid arbitrary coding rules.

3 – my friend – is sleeping on my couch, unaware that i’m creepily taking pictures of her and editing them in photoshop

4 – feelings – they suck and cause problems, we as a human race should just get rid of them, or exchange them for heat vision or robot parts.

5 – rambling – since I am incapable of doing it in real life, online when no one is looking at me

6 – alf –  is aweosme.

Last Semester Flash Stuff

So last semester, I had to make a interactive book and this is what I came up with:

Hellsing Preview Book

All the images were animated using Action Script, and it was so much fun to make.

I really like Action script, only because it makes edits so much easier in the long run. This book was really fun to make, and that’s why I chose to make an animated comic book in the same way for my Independent Production Class, this semester. Hopefully it will be done by the end of summer and I will get to post it here along with this one.

I also uploaded a bunch of our lab files to my website, so I’d have somewhere to keep them and keep track of what I learned. They can be found here School Stuff, most of them are introductory labs from class, but they all have code that our teacher gave us to use.

Flash Games

One thing that will seems to continue through the Flash crisis, are Flash games. Websites such as Adult Swim and Addicting Games, always seems to have newly uploaded games to choose from almost every day.

I don’t know what it is about Flash games, their siren call never ceases to quit. Whether, during the day or at work, or even during some classes, you can just get this gnawing feeling that your attention is required elsewhere. Like being an Amateur Surgeon, or beating the new Happy Wheels level, or running along through the newest Robot Unicorn Instalment.

Although the best of the best Flash games are ported over to Android and IOS devices, nothing beats looking like you’re doing work on a computer, when you have actual important work to be doing.

No but really Amateur Surgeon is great (is too short to be worth paying $2.99 for on the App Store) and totally free on the great and powerful internet.

There is always games to play online, and Flash games are an endless source of entertainment, even the bad ones are worth checking out once.

Last semester, we had to create our own Flash game, which proved to be awful, but at the same time, I can now appriciate the work that does go into the creation of the games, whether or not they work or go viral.

Flash on the Web

Flash is still widely used on the web. For things like:

– banners

– ads

– menus

These are some really interesting uses of ads : 5 Awesome Flash Ads.

Those are all very cool and showcase the more interesting and creative ways to use Flash. Most banners on any website you see are still Flash based.

With the boost in mobile technology however, those banners are no longer viewable. A lot of people are now viewing websites from a mobile platform, which (most) do not support Flash. So if these banners are no longer viewable, why should a company pay for a designer to create one. It seems like wasted money for any company.

Hype Frame Work

For this last semester in DMA, in our final Flash class, we are using “HypeFramework” from hypeframework.org. Basically it’s building blocks in flash that allow you to more easily code certain things, it also more easily allows you to incorporate audio into animations, as well as other thing.

The first couple of weeks, we were showed how to create completely different images from simple shapes and having them pulse to audio. We were also showed how to create a sort of Flash painting tool, that tracks where the cursor is and allows the user to draw on screen.

I’m sure there are many other cool uses for the framework, but other than it being really interesting and fun to mess around with, I don’t see it being any use. Other than other DMA students and the people involved with creating the framework, not many people are using it.

A Ray of Hope

So I recently found an entire website dedicated to animations of all kinds. Every week they upload a new animation to each category. And they do have quite the library of Flash Videos. All of which are quite impressive and range in a variety of styles so they are able to appeal to anyone. A lot of them are mini movies, and can go in depth in a short amount of time. Be sure to check some of the out!
